Former basketball player turned actor reveals life in a wheelchair: ‘In my dreams I can still run’

On January 9, a video titled “The One Choice That Changed My Life in an Instant” was uploaded to the “Weracle” YouTube channel. In the episode, lower body paralysis creator Park Wi welcomed Oh Seung Hwan, also known as creator Wooni, as a guest.

Appearing confidently in a wheelchair, Oh Seung Hwan introduced himself as a livestream creator active on TikTok. “I was working as an actor and model,” he explained. “Now I create live content while using a wheelchair.”

Once an up-and-coming actor with an athletic background, Oh Seung Hwan suddenly disappeared from the entertainment scene, only to reemerge years later as a global social media star. He revealed that he has been using a wheelchair for six years following a serious accident.

Recalling the accident, he said: “It was winter. I was walking home after work when I slipped in the landscaped area of the apartment complex. The ground was frozen and I fell backwards, hitting the back of my head.” The fall caused serious damage to the cervical spine, in particular the fifth and sixth vertebrae.

“My right leg has improved a lot,” he said, “but my left side still feels like partial paralysis.”

For years, Oh Seung Hwan has deliberately avoided showing off his wheelchair on social media, fearing criticism that he would exploit his injury to gain attention. “I didn’t want people to misunderstand,” he admitted. “So I tried not to show it.”

During the interview, he initially planned to transfer from the wheelchair to a chair, but changed his mind during the show. “When I saw Park Wi greeting me warmly from his wheelchair, I no longer felt the need to hide,” he said. “I decided to be open about everything.”

The emotional conversation also touched on the psychological consequences of the accident. Oh Seung Hwan revealed that he isolated himself from the world for a year after his injury. “The lights go out early in the hospital,” he recalled. “I didn’t wake up until 2 or 3 pm. I loved to dream, because in my dreams I could run.”

Park Wi empathized, sharing that he often dreams of playing soccer again. Oh Seung Hwan added, “When I wake up, I’m like, ‘Right… I can’t move.’ Then I try to fall asleep again.

Looking back, he admitted: “Sometimes I wonder if I would be in better shape now if I had recovered mentally and focused on rehab sooner.”

His breakthrough came after a friend encouraged him to try live streaming. During a broadcast, a famous Thai actor mentioned him on air, which led to a surge in international attention. Since then, Oh Seung Hwan has built a passionate global fan base.

“Fans send in photos of themselves wearing T-shirts with my face on it,” he said with a smile. “They tell me to continue rehabilitation and say they will stay by my side until the day I walk again.”

Sidelined by tragedy, Oh Seung Hwan has redefined his identity, not as someone confined to a wheelchair, but as a creator who inspires audiences around the world through honesty, resilience and courage.
