Fireworks go wild, injuring 17 at South Korean music festival

During a music festival held on September 6, 2024 in Jecheon City, fireworks went wrong, injuring 17 people in the audience. 20th Jecheon International Music and Film Festival was held that day, with fireworks being launched to celebrate the event. The fireworks instead fell towards the audience, causing burns to a man in his 40s and a teenage girl. In addition to them, 15 other people were sent to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.

There were said to be around 2,000 people in the audience. The event was temporarily halted to deal with the incident, and was later resumed. Police determined that the organizers had prepared fireworks, but they were thrown in the direction of the audience, causing the incident.

The police are currently investigating to verify whether the event took place in compliance with safety measures.

The city and the film festival office quickly posted an apology on their website. The second day of the festival, set for September 7, 2024, will not include fireworks or special effects.
