Famous variety show PD accused of sexual harassment after staff dinner incident

A popular variety show (PD) producer, identified only as A, has been accused of sexual harassment by a young member of the production staff, sending shockwaves through the television industry.

According to a report from the Korea Economic Daily on October 31, the alleged victim, a staff member B who was preparing a new season of a popular variety show with PD A, filed a formal complaint with the Mapo Police Station in Seoul last August.

In the complaint, B alleged that during an after-work dinner, PD A had made unwanted physical contact, which she had explicitly refused. Subsequently, B claims that A verbally humiliated her and subsequently removed her from the production team.

Lawyer Lee Eun-ui, who represents the victim, said:

“The victim suffered significant emotional distress and professional harm. She initially sought a solution within the company, but due to insufficient internal measures she was left with no choice but to file a complaint with the police.”

The television company reportedly conducted an internal investigation into the incident. The findings acknowledged some of the allegations of sexual harassment but did not acknowledge allegations of workplace bullying or retaliation.

However, the PD A denied all allegations, insisting that the incident was a misunderstanding. Both parties have since lodged objections to the company’s findings, meaning the case will now be subjected to further scrutiny by the relevant authorities.

“The police maintain that there was no coercive or inappropriate contact. They intend to cooperate fully with the investigation to clarify the facts,” said a source familiar with the situation.

The allegations have reignited discussions in the Korean entertainment industry about power dynamics and gender sensitivity in production environments, where rigid hierarchies often discourage victims from speaking out.

While the company involved has not revealed whether PD A’s current projects will be suspended, industry insiders note that this case could have a major impact on upcoming variety show schedules, especially considering PD A’s long-standing reputation in the industry.

Police are currently continuing their investigations and no formal charges have been confirmed. Both parties remain under scrutiny.
