Appearing on the December 9th broadcast of KBS 1TV’s Morning Yard, BIGBANG’s Daesung talked about his journey to becoming an artist and the touching story behind his family’s support today.
Daesung recently released a new trot single titled “Hando-Chogua,” showcasing his versatility as an artist. During the broadcast he was asked how he became a singer for the first time. Laughing, she recalled, “My father was very strict, so I acted more on the outside. I think that’s when my ‘split personality’ started.”
Daesung shared that he passed YG Entertainment’s audition on the first try, saying that he only targeted YG due to his passion for hip-hop and R&B. He also mentioned Yang Hyun-suk, who he met during the final round. “I still don’t understand why he chose me. Maybe it was an intuition. I’m always grateful to him. He even told me once that he chose me not for my singing but for my smile.”
However, the debut was not easy. His parents strongly opposed the idea at the time due to financial difficulties. “We didn’t have much money. They told me, ‘We can’t support this,'” Daesung recalled. “I was young then, so I thought, ‘I’m going to be successful and never make my parents spend a single penny on me again.’ I was determined to make it myself and proudly told them, “I bought it with my own money.”
BIGBANG later rose to fame with hits like “Lies,” and Daesung said his parents’ attitudes changed dramatically. “Their expressions softened and they began to feel proud.”
Furthermore, Daesung revealed that he has been giving his parents a regular allowance since his first settlement. “It’s been 20 years and they still feel sorry to receive it,” he shared. “They always tell me they won’t spend my hard-earned money carelessly.”
Daesung’s heartfelt story offered a glimpse into the struggles behind his success and the deep bond he maintains with his family even now.
