‘Culinary Class Wars’ Chef Jung Ji-sun Reveals Story of Miscarriage and Can’t Find Comfort in Husband

On November 4th, Canale A broadcast an episode of “Best Friend Documentary – Table for 4” which featured chef Jung Ji-sun inviting his friends – singer Byul, chef Yeo Kyung-rae and entertainer Jung Joon-ha – to his house.

During the show, Jung Ji-sun talked about his bond with Byul, saying: “When I was going through my hardest time, Byul quickly understood my feelings after just a few conversations.” He continued, “Since I didn’t have any female friends while I was working in this industry, I didn’t have anyone who could read my mind. When I was really struggling, he showed so much empathy.

It was revealed that Jung Ji-sun had experienced the pain of a miscarriage earlier this year when she was pregnant with her second child. He shared, “Earlier this year I had an unexpected visitor. I became pregnant with our second child but lost him in the ninth week. My husband was so excited, our son was looking forward to it, and all of our parents were really looking forward to it, but I felt sorry and couldn’t say anything. He added, “As I continued my work after the surgery, I cried silently alone. I never told anyone.”

She went on to describe her family’s reaction to the pregnancy: “When I told my son he was even more excited than I expected, which made me feel like a princess. Even my husband, with whom I sometimes argued, became so happy and turned into an angel.”

Jung Ji blamed herself for the miscarriage. “I had work commitments and thought my body would stay healthy no matter how much I worked,” he explained. “Maybe because I was in my forties when I got pregnant, the baby seemed weaker than expected. In the hospital there was no response, they told me that while the gestational sac was growing, the baby was not breathing. It was shocking, but after I received this news, I sat there thinking, “what should I do?” Since I was on schedule, I had to wait two days for the surgery. I couldn’t have surgery that day because I was too busy.”

Furthermore, he revealed, “After the surgery, I told my husband first and he started crying. I wanted to hear him ask “Are you okay?” but I have never heard those words. Our son was also completely devastated. It was really upsetting.

His closest friends Yeo Kyung-rae and Jung Joon-ha couldn’t hide their sadness after hearing this story for the first time. Jung Ji-sun continued, “I didn’t tell anyone. I couldn’t protect the child,” adding, “So I felt like a sinner. I think I failed to take care of myself. I couldn’t stop working and experiencing all of this while leading such a busy life meant I couldn’t get any comfort. I spoke to Byul briefly and she showed such deep empathy that I was really impressed. I’m so grateful for that.

In response, Byul consoled her by saying: “Who could suffer more than you? But because your husband was in trouble and your son was disappointed, I think you couldn’t find the right time to be sad too. Even when you told me about it, you spoke so calmly instead of crying, which made it even more heartbreaking.”
