Somali livestreamed himself kissing the Statue of Peace at Itaewon, a memorial dedicated to the countless Korean women who were subjected to unspeakable horrors as comfort women during World War II under Imperial Japan. Somalo’s actions, accompanied by his insensitive jokes, sparked an immediate reaction.

On October 24, a Somali man was attacked by a Korean man while doing a live broadcast after the man recognized him. The man suddenly approached the YouTuber on the street and punched him in the face. Before leaving, he grabbed the Somali’s phone and threw it far away. The streamer and his companions briefly followed the man as he shouted profanities, but he ran away. The Somali was visibly injured by the brawl as he appeared later in the broadcast with an eye patch over his right eye.

The incident went viral in Korea, with many netizens expressing their support for the man who punched the Somali as his problematic conduct during the trip to Korea angered many. For example, on October 17, he uploaded a video of himself pouring instant noodles onto a convenience store table after an employee prohibited him from drinking inside. He was also removed from a Seoul subway train for playing explicit sounds on his phone while live streaming.

This isn’t the first Somali rodeo where he mocks locals while traveling in a foreign country. Last year he was arrested by Japanese police after a series of taunts, including shouting “Fukushima” at construction workers and playing music containing the words “atomic bomb” in public.

At the moment the Korean who hit a Somali has not been identified. While netizens hailed him as a hero, they also called for the YouTuber and his friends to be deported from the country.
