After a long wait, the Korean drama Climax has finally premiered. Despite boasting a stellar cast including Joo Ji Hoon, Ha Ji Won, Nana and Cha Joo Young, the first episode recorded a modest rating of just 2.7%. However, the first few issues don’t seem to fully reflect the drama’s compelling potential.
From the first episode, Climax is stated as a dark and ambitious thriller focused on political power, elite society and calculated relationships. At the center of the story is Tae Seop, played by Joo Ji Hoon, a prosecutor from humble origins driven by relentless ambition, and his wife Sang Ah, played by Ha Ji Won, a once-famous actress whose career collapsed after a tax evasion scandal.

Their lives become intertwined with Yang Mi (Cha Joo Young), a mysterious figure who operates behind the scenes of power deals linking politics and the entertainment industry. While Tae Seop secretly gathers evidence to defeat her and advance his goals, Sang Ah is drawn into the same dangerous web with the promise of a return, only to realize the hidden cost behind that opportunity.
The episode ends on a tense note, suggesting a much deeper and more dangerous power struggle yet to unfold.

While the ratings may seem underwhelming, online reactions tell a different story. Viewers praised the drama heavy atmosphere, fast pace and above all the performances. Joo Ji Hoon, in particular, became the highlight of the premiere. His portrayal of Tae Seop blends charisma with a creepy edge, particularly in a viral scene in which he whistles during a sting operation, exuding charm and a sly, almost sinister aura.
Meanwhile, Ha Ji Won also leaves a strong impression with her layered performance. His character Sang Ah is both ambitious and calculatingand even in the first episode, it delivers bold, memorable moments that hint at more explosive future developments.

Public comments were largely positive, with many taking notice of the drama intensity and mature storytelling. Some even pointed it out Climax AND “not for the faint of heart” AND requires your full attention rather than casual viewing.
Although the 2.7% score is lower than expected for such a high-profile project, the combination of a gripping thriller plot and a powerful cast gives Climax strong potential to gain momentum in future episodes. For now, it’s a slow start, but one that could quickly grow into something much bigger.
