Is Choi Yena’s new song a flop? According to music critics site IZM, the previous IZ*ONE deserved only 0.5/5 stars. However, his Jigumi fans immediately jumped to the idol’s defense.
On October 9, Korean music critic IZM took to his official website to give his rating to Yena’s new single “NEMONEMO”, which was released on September 30.
Out of five stars, the song earned only half a star and the critic justified himself by explaining:
“It’s like a song from a Japanese game or anime. Because of its fast BPM, chaotic synthesizer playback, and high pitch, the lyrics are barely audible, making the whole song messy from start to finish.
The actual sound is also missing amidst the messy melody and progression and only the sound effects are rich. If the goal is to embody through sound the image of a tomboy with unprecedented power, as shown in the video, it is a success. However, if he thought this was music, he was wrong. There is no music in these 3 minutes and 30 seconds.”

The music critic also spoke about how his popularity weakened after he chose another genre path when IZ*ONE split. He also mentioned that even though former MBLAQ Sungmin and Block B Zico participated in the song, it still left “no impact”.
When K-Netz, especially Jigumis (Yena’s fans) found out about this, they were frustrated that IZM labeled it a “poorly rated” song because it sounded like a game or anime song.
Fans pointed out that it was actually a good song and that while it’s not meant to appeal to mainstream fans, otakus love it.

Here are some of the comments:
- “It’s like a Japanese otaku song. I don’t hate it, but I don’t think critics will like it.”
- “It sounds like a song that critics would absolutely hate, lol. But the company knew this and took a chance anyway. They released it to drum up buzz by making it addictive and a fun meme.”
- “But I like ‘NEMONEMO’ precisely because of the elements the critic mentioned. It’s like game music, with a fast pace and sharp, refreshing vocals, and a simple, repetitive melody, which instantly sticks in your ears. .”
- “I agree with some things they said, but I don’t think it’s bad enough to deserve a 0.5. It seems like the genre itself is being ignored, lol. They say you can’t hear the lyrics and they’re too busy with the lyrics sound effects, but I wonder what that critic thinks of a genre like kawaii bass.”
