Cha Eun Woo is once again the center of public attention as his recent tax dispute begins to spill over into his military service.
Shortly after issuing a formal apology related to the KRW 200 billion tax revaluation, a new development emerged: a public petition calling for a review of his military position. The complaint was reportedly filed through Korea’s êµë¯¼ì‹ ë¬¸ê³ (National Petition System), urging authorities to reconsider whether Cha Eun Woo should continue to serve in the military band.
According to the petitioner, the military band is a role often exposed to the public through official events and promotional activities. As such, it has symbolic value and reflects the image of the armed forces. The complaint alleges that an individual involved in a serious public controversy may not be suited to such a visible position, requiring a reevaluation of his position.
The petitioner further stated this maintaining his current role could lead to a perception of injustice among other soldiers, potentially impacting morale. The issue has gained traction online, especially since it closely follows Cha Eun Woo’s personal statement acknowledging liability and confirming full payment of taxes.
However, the Ministry of National Defense already addressed similar concerns earlier this year. Officials said military assignments are determined based on regulations and command authority and clarified that there are currently no discussions or decisions regarding a change in his position. They also underlined this Tax issues do not fall under military misconduct unless directly related to service violations.
Industry watchers note that while the likelihood of an actual reassignment remains low, the situation highlights how Cha Eun Woo’s controversy continues to spread across several aspects of his public life.
The moment is particularly delicate. Only the day before, the ASTRO member had publicly apologized, stating that he would not shirk responsibility and that he had already fulfilled his tax obligations. Despite this, the emergence of the petition suggests that public opinion remains divided, with scrutiny that extends beyond the entertainment industry and extends to his role as an active duty soldier.
