His journey was stopped by South Korean police.
A North Korean defector in his 30s was captured by South Korean police after attempting to cross the Unification Bridge in a stolen city bus.
Police in North Gyeonggi Province revealed on October 1, 2024 (KST) that they are currently investigating Man A, who was transferred from Paju Police Station after being arrested on suspicion of theft.
Man A is accused of stealing a City Line bus from a garage in the city of Paju around 1 a.m. and driving it to the southern end of the Unification Bridge, where he was warned by a South Korean soldier on guard. Ignoring the warnings, Man A continued driving and the bus was stopped after crashing into a barricade.
During police interrogation, Man A reportedly said: “I did it because life in South Korea is difficult and I want to return to North Korea.” According to further reports, Man A is known to have defected more than ten years ago and lived in Seoul until recently.
A police official stated: “Given Man A’s motives, actions and statements, we may consider applying charges under the National Security Act.”
The northern section of the Unification Bridge is closed to civilians and passage is permitted only upon presentation of a special pass.
