Despite the enthusiasm of the two BTS members, the fandom had mixed reactions.

While Pharrell is best known for his music, some ARMYs are speculating that the collaboration is related to Louis VuittonPharrell is the artistic director of the men’s line, while J-Hope is a global brand ambassador.

Regardless of the type of collaboration, many ARMYs would like J-Hope not to associate with Pharrell Williams. This is due to Pharrell’s ties to Zionism.

Since October 2023, at least 41,020 Palestinians, including some 16,500 children, have been killed, according to Al-Jazeera. Over 94,925 people have been injured and over 10,000 remain missing in Israel’s war on Gaza, as Palestinians starve, are displaced and have lost their homes, families and friends.

However, many support Israel’s actions, arguing that they were justified by the Hamas attacks on October 7. According to Wikipedia, these attacks “killed 1,139 people, including 764 civilians and 373 Israeli security personnel. Another 251 people were taken hostage during the initial attack on Israel in the Gaza Strip.”

However, others believe that Hamas’s actions were also in retaliation for Israel’s long history of mistreatment of Palestine, as Israel is technically illegally occupying Palestinian land. According to a 2017 report Amnesty item, “Over the past 50 years, Israel has forced thousands of Palestinians off their land, illegally occupying and using it to create settlements that are home exclusively to Israeli Jewish settlers.”

Because of this ongoing war that many now agree is a genocide of Palestine, many ARMYs would like BTS members to have no ties to Zionism. This includes not collaborating with people who have sided with Israel.

Pharrell Williams has not simply expressed Zionist beliefs like some artists. In 2018, Pharrell was a special musical guest at the annual FIDF Western Region Gala, celebrating Israel’s 70th anniversary. The celebrity-attended event reportedly raised $60 million for the Israeli military (also known as the Israel Defense Force or the Israeli Occupation Force) as part of a fundraiser. The Israeli military is responsible for many atrocities that netizens cannot ignore.

Many ARMYs were disappointed to see J-Hope so willingly associating himself with Pharrell Williams, despite knowing what Pharrell stood for.

As a result, ARMYs continue to trend #HYBEDivestFromZionism and #SpeakYourselfBTS via X (formerly Twitter). Some have been trying to get BTS members to speak up for Palestine for nearly a year. The fandom has also urged BTS’s company, HYBE, to divest from Zionism due to Brown Scooterhis strong involvement.

While BTS members may not be able to get Braun removed from their company, they may choose who not to collaborate with. Thus, many ARMYs are urging J-Hope to reconsider his association with Pharrell Williams.

Many of BTS members’ recent collaborations have sparked mixed reactions within the fandom due to the artists’ Zionism. Read more below.
