BTS Surpass Bruno Mars, Named ‘Biggest Pop Stars of the 21st Century’ by Billboard

On the 10th (local time), Billboard announced that BTS was included in their list of “the biggest pop stars of the 21st century.” They explained, “They have elevated K-pop to a global level” and “have set a high bar for pop music success over the past decade.”

BTS is the only K-pop group to make it onto this list. Billboard added, “They broke down barriers that limited boy bands, K-pop, and Korean artists” and “achieved success on par with The Beatles, creating a new template for all pop music.”

Billboard cited the members’ musical talent and performance skills, as well as their fanbase, ARMY, as key factors in BTS’s success. They specifically highlighted ARMY, noting that “They have strengthened solidarity between different communities, beyond age, race and religion.” They further stated: “No other group can match BTS’s achievements in this century” AND “They really broke new ground.”

Billboard has released its list of the 25 most important and influential pop stars of the 21st century, two names a week since last month. Previous entries include Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, One Direction, Bad Bunny, Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry, who took the 20th and 25th spots, respectively.
