On October 19, four days after the now infamous event, South Korea finally issued a belated apology via social media, admitting to “inadequate composition and execution” of the campaign. The apology acknowledged the pain caused to breast cancer patients and their families and promised a complete review of event planning for the future.
However, the apology did little to ease public anger. Netizens criticized South Korea for disabling comments sections on their posts, including the apology itself, seeing it as an attempt to avoid responsibility. Ironically, this has led many to flood unrelated posts with complaints, particularly a recent fashion video of actress Hyeri, which had been uploaded shortly before the apology.
Although Hyeri had no involvement in organizing the event, she became the unfortunate target of negative reactions. Comments ranged from “What’s the point of apologizing if you turn off feedback?” TO “Hyeri, open the comments section and apologize properly,” despite having no role in the matter. While some online voices have defended her, inciting others to do so “criticism directed at South Korea, not innocent celebrities,” the emotional fallout had already begun to snowball.
The controversy has also trapped the comedian Jo Se-howho appeared at the event and was seen toasting with BLACKPINK’s Rosé and the actor Lee Dong-hwi. Critics have criticized the atmosphere as a “celebrity drinking party”questioning the appropriateness of such scenes in a breast cancer awareness campaign.
Jo Se-ho appearance drew even harsher criticism due to her current role tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block.”where he will host an episode with Park Mi-suna veteran actress returning to television after undergoing treatment for early-stage breast cancer. “How can he look Park Mi-sun in the eye after that event?” one user asked.
However, others called for restraint. “Neither Hyeri nor Jo Se-ho planned this event,” a comment read. “Blaming all participants equally is unfair. The responsibility lies with the organizers.”
