BLACKPINK Rosé’s chart performance fails to impress Koreans

BLACKPINK‘S Rose has made a highly anticipated return with his debut studio album Rosie on December 6, with the single “Toxic Till The End”.

The album consists of 12 tracks that showcase a blend of ’90s R&B, shimmering synthpop and emotional ballads. The lyrics delve into his personal experiences of excitement, heartbreak and struggles with fame in his twenties.

Prior to the album’s release, Rosé released the first single, “APT”, on October 18, a collaboration with Brown Mars. The song became an instant hit and saw huge worldwide success. It reached the top of the Billboard Global 200 and various international charts, including South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. It also made the top ten in the US and UK, cementing its appeal in such large markets.

Despite the huge success of “Apt.”, Rosé’s follow-up single, “Toxic Till The End,” failed to meet expectations, especially in South Korea. Although it managed to chart globally on Spotify, reaching Ranked 24th globally with over 3.8 million streams and 100th in the US with nearly 600,000 streams, Korean fans don’t seem impressed.

A post on the popular online forum Pann discussing the song’s results gained traction but attracted critical comments from netizens. Many have pointed out the perceived dependence on Bruno Mars for the success of “Apt.” and the lackluster results of its latest outing.

Critics also noted that despite her US tour and extensive promotion, Rosé’s performance did not live up to the high expectations set by BLACKPINK’s global dominance.

  • “Bruno Mars brought it all forward.”
  • “If it wasn’t for APT, it would have been an even bigger flop…”
  • “I heard that 310,000 copies were sold on the first day, but 290,000 of those were from Chinese bulk purchases. LOL. Seriously, there are no fans in Korea?”
  • “But seriously, considering that APT has ‘blown up’ and she has been actively touring the US as a local artist… it’s still below expectations, isn’t it?”
  • “Can’t sell albums, streaming is poor, even mentioning her boyfriend gets no reaction. What can you do?”
