Squid game director Hwang Dong Hyuk talked about the surprising nomination of the second season for the prestigious Golden Globe Awards. In a recent interview, Hwang revealed his initial disbelief and explained why he knew the show’s second season wouldn’t take home an award.
The Golden Globe Awards announced it in December Squid game 2 was nominated for “Best Television Series Drama” at the next ceremony. This recognition came as a shock, given that the season had not yet premiered. The series was selected after judges were given early access to the episodes.
Although the nomination itself aroused enthusiasm, Squid game 2 he ultimately did not win during the awards event held on January 5. However, the nomination alone is considered groundbreaking, as it occurred before the season’s official release on December 26.

Hwang explained that he had little hope of the second season winning major awards.
To be honest, I didn’t have any expectations regarding the awards for season 2 when I decided to split it into two parts: seasons 2 and 3.
Since the story is not complete and the message I wanted to convey was not fully revealed, I thought it would be difficult to win an award in this state. To receive such recognition, the story must be told in its entirety, and this has not yet happened. So I wasn’t expecting anything at all.

Despite his reservations, Hwang said he was deeply moved by the nomination, describing it as an unexpected honor.
I was shocked and surprised that it was even nominated before its release. Even just being one of the six works selected is like winning a prize. I am very satisfied with it.

Reflecting on the differences between the Season 1 and Season 2 awards trips, Hwang shared his gratitude for being able to attend the ceremony this time. During the breakthrough success of the first season, she was unable to attend due to the Golden Globes boycott on diversity grounds. Actor Or Yeong SuHis then win for Best Supporting Actor, however, remains a historic moment.

Hwang concluded by hinting at his hopes for season three, which he says will deliver the complete narrative he intended.
During the first season, there were overlapping issues with COVID-19 and the Golden Globes boycott over diversity issues. I couldn’t attend the ceremony and only actor Oh Young Soo received an award. This time I am happy and grateful to have the opportunity to participate.
Personally, I don’t have high expectations for winning an award, but if I had to aim for something, it might be with the third season, when the conclusion of the story will be revealed.
