ASTRO’s Cha Eun Woo faces tax investigation while serving in the military

On January 30, lawyer Kim Jung Ki appeared on the program “Lee Won Hwa Case X File” and we discussed the ongoing situation involving Cha Eun Woo. According to Kim, the Seoul Regional Tax Bureau’s No. 4 Investigation Bureau launched an intensive audit against Cha last year, ultimately seeking around KRW 20 billion in back taxes.

Authorities suspect that Cha Eun Woo funneled personal income through a management company allegedly created by his mother, potentially as a shell company to reduce tax obligations.

Currently enlisted in the military, Cha Eun Woo remains under investigation. Attorney Kim stated: “Being a soldier does not exempt him from legal proceedings. Investigators may visit his base or arrange interrogations during his leave.” He added that even if the alleged crime occurred before enlistment, military prosecutors could coordinate with civilian authorities to advance the investigation.

Following the controversy, a video featuring Cha Eun Woo on the KFN channel operated by the Ministry of National Defense was taken offline. Meanwhile, a citizen has reportedly filed a formal petition requesting a review of Cha’s assignment to the military band, questioning whether his position remains appropriate amid the ongoing charges.

The Ministry of Defense confirmed the petition and explained that it has been forwarded to Cha’s unit inspection office for consideration. Any personnel decisions, however, fall within the authority of its commanding officers. As Attorney Kim noted, “Only Cha’s senior officers have the authority to change his assignment, and no outside party can interfere with that authority unless they are higher up the chain of command.”

Cha Eun Woo’s agency, Fantagio, released a statement on January 27, affirming its cooperation with tax authorities: “The matter is currently being investigated through appropriate legal procedures. Both the agency and the artist are cooperating fully within the required scope. Once the legal and administrative conclusions are reached, we will take all necessary actions accordingly.”

This evolving situation has attracted widespread attention, raising questions about the accountability of public figures even as they fulfill national service obligations.
