The group’s lore has long been intertwined with the Metaverse, and each member has their own computer-generated æ-aespa counterpart.
Another AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the aespa universe is the character Nævis (also known as ship OR Snows). He is responsible for helping the party and their avatars coexist as they fight the fictional Black Mamba scoundrel.
On January 25, 2023, it was announced that Nævis would be making his official stage debut in March. CEO of SM Entertainment Lee Sung Soo (also known as Chris Lee) revealed the company’s plans to introduce her as an “AI artist.”
Nævis’s voice is said to have been created by analyzing twelve different voice actors. His official debut is said to have taken place at the international music festival Shows (also known as From south to southwest), with a VR concert, attended by the four members and Nævis.
Naevis, who until now has only appeared as a CG image in aespa’s music videos, is planning to be showcased as an AI artist. She will be an artist born from the mobilization of skills for natural movements, newly created voice and real-time communication.

Yet, the festival went ahead and Nævis did not make his debut. Fans wondered if SM Entertainment had scrapped the idea of Nævis making his solo debut.

Now, after more than a year, Nævis finally debuts!
Nævis is reportedly set to debut on September 10 with the single “Done.” SM Entertainment reportedly utilized the power of AI-generated content and a voice created using advanced AI techniques to make his debut.
SM Entertainment launched social media channels for Nævis and released a series of concept photos for his debut single, “Done.” It features images of the AI idol against the backdrop of the virtual world.
Netizens were in awe of Nævis’s design, with many saying that it looks like a mix of æspa members’ images. Some even see a resemblance to Red Velvet‘S Wendy.
Netizens joked that Nævis was “the least controversial idol ever”. However, he has received criticism, as many oppose the use of AI, as there is debate over its ethicality. Many feel that AI is stealing jobs, and in this specific case, it is unfair for an AI character to debut in front of many trainees and idols.
Some have tried to defend Nævis, saying that even though she is an AI character, it is likely that she was still created by people using CGI. Therefore, people were still employed.
What do you think of Nævis and his upcoming debut?
