On October 10, South Korean actor Choi Hyun Wook apologized following controversy over his ceremonial pitch in a recent KBO playoff game.
The incident occurred during the first match of the KBO semi-playoffs between SSG Landers and Samsung Lions at SSG Landers Field in Incheon on October 9. Choi Hyun Wook was invited as the ceremonial pitcher, while a child fan served as the batter.
However, what was supposed to be a lighthearted moment quickly turned tense when a visibly nervous Choi threw a fast, energetic pitch. The ball sailed over the child’s head, narrowly avoiding contact, prompting gasps from the audience and a visible stir in the crowd.
Following online criticism, many netizens pointed out that Choi, who once played baseball in high school, threw with excessive force. Some baseball fans also noted that he interacted with the catcher but did not greet or acknowledge the child hitter, which they found disappointing.
Choi responded to the incident via fan communications platform Bubble, saying:
“Yesterday I was really nervous and the ball slipped from my hand. I will try to contact the young batsman and his parents today or tomorrow to personally apologise.”
He continued: “I was so excited to return to the stadium after a long time. I should have thrown the ball delicately, especially with a child standing at bat, but in my nervous state I forgot about it. I truly apologize.”
Choi Hyun Wook made his debut in the 2019 web drama Real:Time:Love and has since starred in popular dramas such as Twenty-Five Twenty-One, Weak Hero Class 1, Racket Boys, High Cookie, and The Boy Who Looks Like a Black Dragon. He will also appear in the upcoming Netflix drama The Boy in the Last Row next year.
