An active-duty police officer was recently arrested on a charge of trespassing. But the arrest led to the shocking discovery that he was also the perpetrator in a 13-year-old rape case.
On August 28 KST, the Eunpyeong Police Station announced that it had transferred “A,” a man in his 40s, to the Seoul Western District Prosecutor’s Office on charges of trespassing and rape. He was serving as a lieutenant in the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s mobile unit, but was removed from his post.
This discovery was triggered by a tip police received in May about someone sneaking into a karaoke bar in Eunpyeong while the business was closed. They launched an investigation and identified “A” as the suspect.
During the investigation into “A,” his DNA was sent for analysis, where it was found to match DNA found at the scene of a rape in Gangnam, Seoul, 13 years ago. According to police, “A” has refused to comment on the case so far.
The news left Korean netizens completely shocked, who expressed their disappointment at the repeated stories of sexual violence occurring across the country.
- “Look at the state of this country, really. LOL.”
- “Excuse me…?”
- “Why is South Korea so…”
- “Isn’t that crazy?”
- “Ugh.”
- “A police officer…?
