She cheated on him multiple times.
The shocking story of a couple who went from courtship to court recently made headlines around the world.
The viral story is set in Shanghai, China, and the protagonists are a man named Li and a woman named Xu. According to the Shanghai Morning Post, Li and Xu met in 2018 and soon started dating. But trouble came two years later, in 2020, when Li discovered that Xu was cheating on him, that too with his nephew.
The betrayal infuriated Li and he decided to end their relationship. Desperate to save the relationship, Xu wrote him a letter of apology. “I thought deeply about my mistakes. Yes, I have cheated on you multiple times, causing you immense pain“he admitted in the letter, adding:”I am sincerely sorry. I will correct my mistakes and compensate you with my sincerity.“
And make up for it he did. Over the next two days, he transferred 300,000 Chinese yen (about 40,000 US dollars) to Li through several bank transactions as a sign of his sincere apology. Li eventually forgave her and their relationship continued for another two years, only to discover that she was still involved with his nephew.
This revelation prompted Li to end their association once and for all. But Xu demanded the return of the apology money, claiming it was a gift conditional on their marriage. According to her, since they broke up, the condition of marriage no longer existed, and therefore Li no longer had the right to possess the sum. Li refused the request, claiming that she had cheated on him multiple times, causing him considerable emotional distress, and viewed the money as compensation for his actions.
Xu took her ex-boyfriend to a Shanghai court. After hearing the case earlier this year, the court ruled in Li’s favor, saying he was not legally obligated to return the money since Xu had given it to him voluntarily when they were dating. The court did not consider it a gift.
The case has garnered considerable attention online, with users mostly siding with Li. What are your thoughts?
