In an unexpected and touching moment, the directors of KPop Demon Hunters took the stage at the 2025 MAMA Awards to accept the Music Visionary of the Year award and celebrated with a rare on-stage selfie.
The event took place on November 29 at Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong and was broadcast live via Mnet. Hosted by actress Kim Hye Soo, Chapter 2 of the ceremony featured a star-studded lineup including aespa, AllDay Project, G-Dragon, Stray Kids, RIIZE, TXT, ZB1 and more.
While presenting the award, Kim Hye Soo reflected on the unifying power of music: “We come from different places and speak different languages, but music unites us. K culture is at the heart of this global unity: from music to films, dramas, animation, even K-food and K-beauty.”
The prestigious Music Visionary of the Year award, given to individuals or works that drive cultural trends, was awarded to the Netflix animated film KPop Demon Hunters.
Co-director Chris Appelhans began his acceptance speech by honoring the victims of the recent tragic fire in Hong Kong: “We want to express our deepest condolences to all those affected. We are also grateful to the emergency workers working on site.”
Maggie Kang, also co-director, added: “Thank you for this incredible honor. On behalf of Sony Pictures Animation, Netflix and everyone who made this film possible, we are truly amazed. This film has touched audiences around the world and being on stage at MAMA tonight feels like a full circle moment. We created this film for K-pop and for all of you.”
Chris Appelhans continued, “Think of this film as a love letter to K-pop. It’s about the power of music: how it connects, heals, and illuminates our world.”
In a rare and charming gesture, Maggie Kang asked the audience: “If it’s okay with you, can we take a selfie before we leave the stage?” The directors then took a photo with the audience, leaving everyone with a smile and a sense of shared joy.
The moment highlighted not only the global reach of the film, but also the emotional connection between creators and fans, making it a truly unforgettable moment of the 2025 MAMA Awards.
