A young man in his 20s, named Mr. A, was sentenced to four years in prison by the Busan District Court for the crime of abandoning and causing the death of his mother. The court announced the decision on November 9, following a trial that shed light on the details of this tragic case.
The incident, which occurred between December 2021 and March last year, involved Mr A repeatedly assaulting his mother, Ms B, a woman in her 50s who had struggled with mental health problems for two decades. Due to his condition, he relied on his family for basic daily support. The family, which originally included Mr A’s father and older sister, faced changes in March 2020, when the father had to be hospitalized due to health problems, leaving Mr A as Mrs A’s primary carer. The court heard that Mr A’s behavior became violent when his mother disturbed him, such as eating food she had bought or interfering with his long hours of computer gaming. Reports indicated that Mr. A not only assaulted Ms. B, but also denied her basic necessities, including food and medications. This neglect, compounded by violence, led to his deteriorating health and death at home in March last year.
The court’s ruling recognized Mr A’s guilty plea, but highlighted that, despite the difficulties of caring for his mother alone, he failed to provide her with the most basic care and instead inflicted harm on her that it left her unable to move. Furthermore, the court noted that Mr A kept his mother’s body in the room, fearing that the consequences of his actions would be discovered.
