According to the Recording Academy, which organizes the Grammy Awards, no K-pop artists were listed among the final nominees announced on Nov. 8. This marks the second consecutive year without a Grammy nomination for K-pop, following BTS’ string of nominations for “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance” from 2020 to 2022.
One factor is likely that BTS and BLACKPINK, the two most internationally recognized K-pop groups, have been overall inactive due to BTS members’ military service and BLACKPINK’s focus on solo projects.
The Grammy Awards, established in 1959 by the Recording Academy, a collective of artists, producers, sound engineers and critics, seek to recognize artistry and musical quality rather than commercial success or chart performance. Winners are chosen by member voting.
Notably, in 2022, BTS achieved an important milestone by being nominated in three categories: “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance,” “Best Music Video,” and “Album of the Year.”
