On October 24, a video titled “Kim Soo-mi is in grave danger… I can see the Grim Reaper for Kim Soo-mi… How will Kim Soo-mi survive from now?” was uploaded to a shaman’s YouTube channel.
The 8-minute video included the shaman’s contact details. As of 4pm on October 26, the video had garnered over 240,000 views, attracting widespread attention.
However, it was later revealed that the video, in which he claimed to have “predicted Kim Soo-mi’s death“, was actually changed soon after news of his passing broke. The title and thumbnail were changed to give the impression that the shaman had foreseen his death.
In fact, the content of the video contradicted the sensational title. Instead, he focused on the prediction that Kim Soo-mi would have great luck in her career next year, sparking even more outrage among viewers.
Netizens responded angrily, saying: “Exploiting a person’s death in this way is unforgivable“, “Don’t be fooled; the title was changed for shock value“, “In the video they even said that he would have a great career next year” AND “Are they trying to profit from his death?“
Following the backlash, the comments section of the video was closed by the channel manager.
In this regard, the channel operator denied having changed the title after the news broke. They claimed that the shaman had indeed predicted Kim Soo-mi’s death but had edited the video to soften its impact, as reported by Hankook Ilbo on October 25.
YouTuber A told the media: “The shaman mentioned Kim Soo-mi’s death several times, but out of caution we deleted many parts. It is true that the title was chosen for its provocative nature, but why should we change it? Didn’t the video also say that if your luck is too good, it could mean a peaceful death?“
Despite the controversy, the channel continued to upload more videos related to Kim Soo-mi’s death. A new video was released on October 26, featuring a different shaman than the previous video.
The new shaman analyzed Kim Soo-mi’s fortune, claiming that “76 years was the golden age of his health” and stating that it was a “person endowed with spiritual gifts“.
Kim Soo-mi died on the morning of October 25 after being found in cardiac arrest at her home. She was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead. His wake will be held at the funeral hall of Hanyang University Hospital in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, with his funeral set for October 27 at 11am. The location was reportedly Honor Stone, Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.
