Some call it “offensive.”
Images during NCT Yuta‘s recent solo concerts have sparked debate online.
On October 3, Yuta made his long-awaited solo debut Depth. A music video for the title track “Off The Mask” was released on the same day.
Prior to the album’s release, it was announced that Yuta would embark on his solo tour, HOPE. Throughout October, the idol will perform at venues across Japan and has already completed two shows at Kitakyushu Soliel Hall on October 5 and 6.
Fans were treated to performances of songs from the album, covers of songs and previously unreleased songs. However, one of the stages of the concert sparked controversy online.
During one of his unreleased songs, a large statue of Jesus Christ on a crucifix is on stage, and the idol is shown singing and kneeling before it.

In Christianity, Jesus Christ was crucified as a sacrifice for the sins of the world, and the image of Christ on the crucifix was considered sacred.
As a result, some criticized Yuta for images from his concert, including a viral TikTok criticizing his performance and comparing reactions to criticism that THE SERAPHINS received for images in “Easy”.

On the other hand, fans have pointed out that the genre that Yuta’s music was inspired by, Visual Kei, has used religious imagery over the years and is not out of the ordinary. Christianity and other religions have also been used and examined in multiple art forms.
Fans also pointed out that the song Yuta is singing is called “Prayer” and reportedly contains lyrics asking God for strength, meaning the crucifix was not used mockingly.
