A user of Xiaohongshu, the Chinese version of Instagram, recently shared a post in which he selects the most beautiful school uniforms in Asia. The post received over 2,000 likes and sparked lively discussions among netizens.
In this post, which focused exclusively on female student uniforms, South Korea ranked third. Singapore was ranked 10th, India ranked 9th, Indonesia ranked 8th, Malaysia ranked 7th, Thailand ranked 6th, Philippines ranked 5th and Vietnam ranked 4th. China ranked 2nd, while Japan took first place. Japanese school uniforms consist of plaid skirts, gray vests, and neck ribbons.
However, netizens criticized the photos that accompanied the ranking, claiming that the uniforms were depicted inaccurately.
In particular, the uniforms of Malaysia and Singapore have become a point of contention. One netizen commented: “The 10th place uniform is Malaysia’s, but when did it become Singapore’s uniform?” Another netizen from Singapore added: “I have never seen this kind of uniform in Singapore.”
Singapore was part of the Malaysian Federation when Malaysia gained independence from Britain in 1957. However, in 1965, due to racial issues, Singapore withdrew from the federation and declared independence, becoming the Singapore we know today.
Some netizens criticized the post’s author for confusing Malaysia and Singapore, pointing out that “Singapore and Malaysia are different countries.” Additionally, concerns have been raised about the length of Malaysian uniforms, which are generally expected to fall below the knee due to the predominantly Muslim population.

Criticisms have also emerged from other countries. Netizens from China, India and Thailand questioned the accuracy of the displayed uniforms. A Chinese user pointed out that uniforms representing China are usually only worn in private schools.
Dissatisfied netizens dismissed the post as “nonsense” and urged others not to believe the photos of the uniforms.
