Korean TikToker’s Viral Video Sparks Heated Debate Over ‘Yellow Fever’

Some thought he was racist.

Online content creator I am from Korea (@iam.from.korea on TikTok) is known for his street interviews, often asking foreigners their opinions on South Korea.

In one of her most recent videos, she approached two black women and asked them their unpopular opinions about Korea. One immediately responded: “Korean men are overrated,” to which her friend agreed, “Very true.” IamfromKorea asked why they consider Korean men overrated. They explained, “The fact is that people keep forgetting that they are men” and “Men are all the same all over the world.”

Women also noticed a trend online of foreigners “swabbing 10” while in Korea, and felt that most men were “average.” They think that people with “yellow fever” think men look better than they actually do.

Some people… They have a little yellow fever. Any guy looks good, a 3 looks like a 7.

Some took offense at the use of the term “yellow fever,” believing that the woman was racist. Calling Asians “yellow” has historically been a racial slur.

Many had to jump to the woman’s defense, explaining to others what “yellow fever” meant. IamfromKorea wasn’t even aware of what “yellow fever” meant in the context of their conversation. The woman explained it as, “If they’re Asian, you jump.”

“Yellow Fever” has long been a slang term for a non-Asian person who often has a sexual obsession with Asian people. Its direct definition would be “Asian fetishization.”

Most of those who understood what the woman meant by “yellow fever” agreed with her. While many agreed that “Korean men are overrated” and glamorized by K-Drama and K-Pop, some thought the women seemed bitter.

Unfortunately, the women in the video have become the target of hateful comments, including xenophobic, racist, and homophobic.
