On July 9, MBC released the first teaser of A bona fide killera drama based on the hit webtoon of the same name. The action-romance series follows Yoo Bo Na (played by Gong Hyo Jin), who appears to be a normal working mother but secretly lives a double life as the legendary sniper known as Kingfisher.
Shortly after the teaser was released, online discussions focused on Jung Joon Won, who plays Yoo Bo Na’s husband, Kwon Tae Sung. In the original webtoon, Kwon Tae Sung is portrayed as an exceptionally handsome man with impeccable manners. His striking appearance is a key part of the story, as Yoo Bo Na falls in love with him at first sight.
Some fans have argued that Jung Joon Won does not match the glamorous visual image established in the webtoon. “His acting isn’t the problem, but he doesn’t fit the role perfectly.” Others defended the casting, commenting: “After seeing the teaser, her gentle and warm image fits the character perfectly” AND “Acting ability matters more than visual similarity.” The debate continues to divide webtoon readers and drama viewers alike.
This isn’t the first time a webtoon adaptation has faced casting controversy. One of the best-known examples is Kim Go Eun in the 2016 tvN drama Cheese in trap. Because the original webtoon had such a devoted fan base, casting decisions were scrutinized so closely that the term “Mother of Cheese” (a comedy Cheese in trap and the Korean word for mother-in-law) was coined to describe overly protective fans.

When Kim Go Eun was cast as Hong Seol, many criticized her for her lack of visual resemblance to the original character. However, public opinion changed dramatically once the drama premiered. Kim Go Eun was praised for bringing warmth, realism and emotional depth to Hong Seol, creating a new interpretation of the beloved heroine. The series debuted with a 3.6% domestic rating before peaking at 5.4%, also dominating television ratings.

More recently, Choo Young Woo faced similar criticism after being cast as Jae Won in the film adaptation of Even if this love disappears from the world tonightreleased last December. In the original novel, Jae Won is a frail, terminally ill young man suffering from heart disease. In contrast, Choo Young Woo’s healthy and athletic physique has led many fans to question the casting based solely on promotional photos.

Despite the criticism, Choo Young Woo delivered a nuanced performance that captured the character’s inner pain and emotional struggles, earning widespread praise from audiences. The film ultimately attracted 860,000 viewers, comfortably surpassing its break-even point and becoming a commercial success.
As Kim Go Eun and Choo Young Woo have proven, the perfect visual resemblance to the source material is not the only ingredient for success. When an actor brings a strong performance and convincing performances to a role, a character can become even more vivid than its original version.
Now, viewers are watching closely to see if Jung Joon Won can pull off the same turnaround and turn initial skepticism into a career-defining role.
