Lee Jun-young reveals why he chased an alleged drunk driver for an hour: ‘I crashed into the car instead’

On July 8 tvN’s Take the block quiz released a preview featuring Lee Jun-young before the episode’s broadcast.

During the preview, host Yoo Jae-suk mentioned Lee Jun-young’s widely praised past actions. “You chased down an alleged drunk driver and helped catch him. That’s incredible.” Yoo said, referring to the incident in which Lee reported a vehicle to police on suspicion of drunk driving and followed it until officers arrived.

In 2021, Lee Jun-young made headlines after chasing a vehicle he suspected was being driven by someone under the influence for about an hour before helping police safely arrest the driver. Although he was later offered a Model Citizen Award for his actions, Lee declined the honor, saying he did not want to receive an award simply because the story had become public.

Recalling the incident, Lee said, “I was speaking briefly on the phone with the CEO of my agency at the time. I told him, ‘Hyung, I have to take care of something for a moment,’ and hung up.”

The program then showed audio from Lee’s emergency call and his vehicle’s dashcam footage recorded during the crash.

In the recording, Lee calmly tells the dispatcher, “I’m near the Jangan Bridge exit and I think the car in front of me is driven by someone under the influence.”

Lee also explained the mindset that led him to follow the vehicle. “Rather than let the driver crash into someone else, I thought, ‘If anything happens, crash into my car.'” he said, drawing attention for his willingness to put himself at risk to protect others.

The episode also features Lee talking about his upcoming military enlistment on July 21.

Yoo Jae-suk asked: “You will enlist on July 21st, in the middle of summer. How do you feel?”

Lee answered honestly, “I feel like I’m on a roller coaster. I probably shouldn’t say this, but even during filming I suddenly feel down. Sometimes I get emotional about things that aren’t even emotional scenes.”

He continued, “There were some adults I looked at and thought, ‘I don’t want to live like this’. But those people also completed their military service, right? So why shouldn’t I be able to do it? That’s what I keep telling myself.”

Meanwhile, Lee Jun-young’s episode Take the block quiz airs July 8 at 8:45 PM KST.
