Ben Chose, queen of K-pop OST, divorces six months after giving birth: “I felt betrayed”

On June 24, Ben appeared in episode 40 of the web variety show Knowing Sister-in-Law, released through the YouTube channel Hyungsoo Is K.Will.

Ben said the divorce process was emotionally exhausting because she wasn’t simply ending a romantic relationship. The former couple also had a child together. “I chose divorce six months after giving birth,” she said. “I feel like I put up with that relationship for five years. Because we weren’t just dating, I had to be very careful.”

She explained that she tried several ways to save the marriage, including remaining patient and expressing her anger, before becoming pregnant during a particularly difficult time. “When my son came to me, I thought, ‘This little boy came to save me,’” Ben recalls. “I thought I could be happy no matter what happened. But even then another incident occurred and the feeling of betrayal was too difficult to handle.”

Ben feared he was making the wrong decision

Ben admitted that he repeatedly questioned whether divorce was the right choice. She imagined what her life would be like three years later, when her daughter would be six, and concluded that the same problems would likely remain. “I thought if nothing changed, it would be better to end it sooner,” he said.

The singer became emotional as she explained that she loved her ex-husband deeply despite incidents that had damaged their trust. “When I love someone, I give them everything,” he said. “There were a lot of things that broke trust between us, but I still loved him very much, so the separation was extremely painful.”

However, Ben emphasized that love alone was not enough to sustain a marriage. “I still believe I made the right decision,” he said. “I must be whole, happy and alive so that my son also lives well.”

He was afraid of public judgement

Ben said her father was strongly opposed to the divorce, but she believed it was necessary for her future. She also feared public judgment after returning as a single mother. Although appearing on Now, I’m Alone was difficult, she chose to tell her story herself.

“I didn’t do anything wrong,” Ben said. “It was a decision I needed to live well.” “The fact that I am a single mother will not change and I have done nothing wrong,” she said. “I wanted to show that it was a decision I needed to live well.”

Ben married a businessman in 2021 and later welcomed a daughter. Their divorce was announced in 2024, with her agency saying at the time that the split was the result of circumstances blamed on her husband. Ben retained custody of his son.
