‘Love Next Door’ Criticized For Insensitive Scene Towards Women

Recently, a scene from episode 7 of Jung Hae-in and Jung So-min’s ongoing K-drama, “Love Next Door,” has attracted attention from internet users for not entirely positive reasons.

In particular, this scene shows the female protagonist Seok-ryu (played by Jung So-min) walking in a dark alley, while the male protagonist Seung-hyo (played by Jung Hae-in) starts following her.

After sensing his follower’s presence, Seok-ryu began to panic and run in fear, until she reached a dead end and was forced to turn around and face Seung-hyo, calling him a “crazy bastard” for scaring her.

However, instead of comforting Seok-ryu, Seung-hyo completely ignored Seok-ryu’s fear and told her to shut up because they were in a residential area.

Then, when Seok-ryu asked Seung-hyo why he suddenly followed her, Seung-hyo asked her why she started running.

When Seok-ryu said she was scared because she thought someone was chasing her, telling Seung-hyo to just call her by her name, Seung-hyo even put the blame on her, saying: “Well, you should have checked behind you. Why were you only looking ahead?”

The scene therefore touched a raw nerve among viewers who felt it had hit “too close to home”.

“For the love of God, stop including stupid scenes like this in K-dramas, especially if the male lead doesn’t realize his mistake and apologize right away,” an audience wrote angrily, adding, “We constantly see news stories of women being attacked and even killed for stopping to check what’s behind them. So why does a male lead in a romantic comedy say this bullshit?? For men, this is just a normal scene, but for women, the fear is real.”

In fact, a critical argument about this scene even became a hot topic on the Korean forum “theqoo”, with over 100,000 views.

Here are some comments from Internet users:

  • Why is the male character like this?
  • The main male character is fucking ruined…
  • ? Is that the male lead? He doesn’t even apologize until the end.
  • Instead of apologizing, he blamed the female lead?? It’s ridiculous when someone gaslights someone after they’ve done something wrong.
  • Damn, I want to beat up the male lead
  • Oh, I hate it when people say stuff like that like it’s nothing.
