In the April 23 broadcast of Divorce campthe story of the first couple of season 21, nicknamed the “Couple’s salary” was introduced.
In the wife segment, viewers saw her daily life after becoming pregnant with her first child while still a senior in high school. She gave birth at a young age and spent much of her twenties devoted entirely to her family. Even now, she continues to take care of the household chores and childcare alone, as her husband is too busy with various commitments and often neglects family responsibilities.
The husband shocked the jury with his statement, “If you keep helping, they stop being grateful” leaving everyone stunned. Because of his behavior, his wife confessed to feeling like a “single mother”, revealing his deep sense of loneliness and attracting the sympathy of viewers. Host Seo Jang Hoon warned her husband that prioritizing work over family could ultimately cause his children to distance themselves from him.
It was also revealed that the husband is involved in numerous agricultural associations, holding multiple titles which further distances him from domestic life. On top of that, he is addicted to gaming – he has reportedly spent around KRW 50 million – and even played games during intimate moments with his wife, shocking both the panel and the audience.
What angered viewers the most were his repeated insensitive remarks. When his wife expressed a desire for affection, he replied: “You don’t feed a fish once you’ve caught it.” When she first told him about her pregnancy in her senior year of high school, he reportedly reacted with: “We’re screwed.” His tendency to make such offensive comments as if they were jokes has fueled widespread criticism.
Meanwhile, the husband’s segment revealed concerns about his wife’s mental health, including her struggle with depression, excessive medication use and a past extreme attempt, raising further alarm.
Seo Jang Hoon pointed out, “Without family, nothing else matters” adding that while work and goals are important, it’s crucial to find a balance before it’s too late.
