On April 13th the organizing committee of the Baeksang Arts Awards announced this year’s nominees through its official channels. The evaluation period covered films, broadcasts (including dramas and variety shows) and theatrical productions released from April last year to March 31 this year. For the Best Variety Show category, nominees included MBC Extreme84, The wonder coachSBS Our balladNetflix Culinary lesson wars 2and Coupang Play White Collar Season 2.
The nominees for Best Male Variety Actor were Kwak Beom, Kian84, Kim Jun Ho and Choo Sung Hoon. Meanwhile, the women’s category included Kim Yeon Koung, Seol In Ah, Lee Su Ji, Jang Do Yeon and Hong Jin Kyung.
After the announcement, some viewers wondered why Yoo Jae Suk, currently active in numerous hit shows such as Take the block quiz, Hangout with YooSBS Whenever possibleand YouTube’s web variety show Pungyanggo 2 on the DdeunDdeun channel was not nominated in any category.
Previously, Pungyanggo Season 1 had been nominated for Best Variety Show at the 61st Baeksang Arts Awardswith Yoo Jae Suk also earning a nomination for Best Male Variety Performer. At the 60th ceremony in 2024, he was nominated in the same category for his work Pinggyegodemonstrating its constant presence in the sector.
However, his most recent win in the category was his 56th Baeksang Arts Awards in 2020, where he took home Best Male Variety Performer in the TV division for Hangout with Yoo.
Despite the lack of nominations this year, Yoo Jae Suk continues to demonstrate strong popularity. According to the Good Data Fundex rankings from March 23 to 29, he placed fifth in the non-dramatic artist category. His shows Hangout with Yoo AND Take the block quiz placed 4th and 8th respectively, highlighting his lasting influence as the nation’s top MC.
Furthermore, Pungyanggo 2released in January, it has exceeded 10 million views on YouTube, while the 100th episode special of Pinggyegoreleased on March 14, it has recorded over 12 million views, maintaining a strong buzz online.
In this situation, some netizens responded by saying this “it’s time to give opportunities to younger artists”, drawing attention to the upcoming final results for the grand prize and major prize categories.
