Hook Entertainment CEO Kwon Jin-young receives suspended prison sentence for embezzlement

On April 3, the Seoul Southern District Court, Criminal Division 12 (President Park Jong-yeol) ruled that Kwon’s actions violated the Law on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes, including embezzlement and breach of trust.

The court said so“Using company resources for personal gain as a controlling figure is socially unacceptable and cannot be considered a misdemeanor. Even a one-person company can cause unexpected harm to others involved, requiring more rigorous oversight.”

However, the court also acknowledged that Kwon admitted to the charges and that all damages were compensated through refunds or deposits.

Kwon was accused of using approximately KRW 4 billion of Hook Entertainment funds between 2012 and 2022 for private purposes, including furniture purchases and insurance payments. He was charged in October last year.

Additionally, Kwon is facing a separate trial for allegedly illegally obtaining prescription sleep medications through an employee. During her 18-year tenure at Hook Entertainment, she also had disputes with singer-actor Lee Seung-gi over severance payments.
