Zhang Linghe’s new drama sparks controversy over its characters’ resemblance to Chiang Kai-shek

Chinese actor Zhang Linghe rose to fame with Zhu Yu, despite the “General Foundation” controversy surrounding the series. His popularity has skyrocketed, with his personal followers on Weibo increasing by 4 million in a short period to reach 18.23 million. Zhang currently has three upcoming dramas: the Republican-era series One Second of Overfire, the historical drama Gui Luan and Lucky Stars, which are generating buzz even before they air.

In One Second of Overfire, Zhang plays Murong Qingyi, the son of a warlord, a character described as outwardly cold but inwardly passionate, combining a sober and chaotic charm. However, discussions have emerged online about the character’s resemblance to former Chinese President Chiang Kai-shek. Some netizens commented: “After the ‘Foundation Cream General’ in Zhu Yu, now Zhang Linghe’s warlord character seems to reference Chiang Kai-shek. It’s time to reconsider his screenplay choices!”

One Second of Overfire will air as early as next month and will co-star actress Wang Churan. The drama blends Republican-era political intrigue, revenge plots and high-voltage romance. The plot centers on Murong Qingyi and her life debt to Ren Susu, with misunderstandings and the taboo identity of her “future sister-in-law” creating emotional tension and twists.

Zhang Linghe continues to attract attention with his upcoming projects, and viewers are eager to see how the character’s controversial portrayal will be received when the series premieres.
