The long-standing controversy surrounding Hwang Hana has resurfaced as South Korean authorities step up their investigation into alleged drug kingpin Park Wang-yeol.
During a regular press conference on April 2, police confirmed that they are expanding their investigation into Park Wang-yeol’s criminal network, promising to uncover more crimes and track down illicit profits. Authorities also addressed the potential link to the infamous Burning Sun scandal, saying any verified link would be thoroughly investigated.
Hwang Hana, grandson of the founder of a major food conglomerate, has previously been identified as a figure linked to drug purchases by Park’s organization. She was also said to be a regular at the Burning Sun nightclub, placing her at the center of a possible link between high-profile drug distribution networks and the controversial club.
The Burning Sun case, which broke out in 2018 in Seoul’s Gangnam district, involved a series of high-profile allegations ranging from drug use and sex crimes to suspected collusion with police. The scandal attracted widespread attention thanks to the involvement of celebrities, including former BIGBANG member Seungri, and led to multiple convictions.
Experts now suggest that the current investigation may point to a larger, more systemic criminal structure. Former police profiler Bae Sang-hoon recently noted that some individuals may have acted as key intermediaries connecting distribution networks with high-profile customers. He also referred to past cases involving the deaths of key figures, arguing that the situation could extend beyond a simple drugs case.
Authorities are currently monitoring Park Wang-yeol’s domestic drug trafficking operations. He is accused of orchestrating multiple large-scale smuggling operations, including the importation of methamphetamine hidden in coffee packages and suitcases via international flights. The total volume of drugs linked to his network, including methamphetamine, ecstasy, ketamine and cannabis, is estimated to be worth billions of won.
As the investigation unfolds, the possibility of reopening some aspects of the Burning Sun case remains on the table. If concrete connections are made, figures previously linked to the scandal – including Hwang Hana – could once again come under legal scrutiny, potentially reigniting one of South Korea’s best-known entertainment controversies.
