Prosecutors appeal Yoo Ah-in’s 1-year prison sentence for drug use

On September 4, the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office filed an appeal seeking a harsher sentence for Yoo Ah-in, who was sentenced in the first trial to one year in prison and a fine of KRW 2 million (about USD 1,500) for habitual drug use, including 181 cases of propofol, illegally prescribing sleeping pills in another person’s name on 44 occasions, marijuana use, and attempted destruction of evidence.

The prosecution explained the reason for the appeal, stating: “Despite the seriousness of the crimes, including the habitual use of various drugs such as marijuana, propofol and zolpidem over a long period of time, and the ordering of others to destroy evidence in order to obstruct justice, the sentence imposed was significantly lighter than the four-year prison term we had requested.”

The Criminal Division 25 of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Ji Gwi-yeon) sentenced Yoo Ah-in to one year in prison and a fine of KRW 2 million. The court also ordered him to complete 80 hours of drug rehabilitation education and pay an additional KRW 1.54 million. Due to concerns about the possibility of escape, the court decided to detain Yoo Ah-in immediately after the sentencing. He was acquitted of some of the charges related to tampering with evidence.

Meanwhile, Yoo Ah-in was charged with administering propofol 181 times between September 2020 and March 2023, as well as illegally purchasing sleeping pills in the name of another person from May 2021 to August 2022.
