Baek Ji-young addresses ‘tension’ rumors with Lee Hyori: ‘We never had a chance to get closer’

On February 21st, a new video entitled “The Legendary Tension Story Lee Hyori vs. Baek Ji-young – The Truth (Live Q&A)” was uploaded to Baek Ji-young’s YouTube channel. During the live broadcast, Baek Ji-young and her husband, actor Jung Suk-won, communicated with fans in real time.

A fan asked: “Do you keep in touch with Lee Hyori?” To this, Baek Ji-young replied, “Why are you so curious?”

The production team then explained that the short clips of what appeared to be a “moment of tension” between the two singers have been circulating online. The clip in question dates back to 2012, when Baek Ji-young appeared as a guest on the SBS broadcast You and Me by Jung Jae-hyung and Lee Hyori.

At the time, Lee Hyori, who debuted in 1998 as a member of Fin.KL, jokingly said: “I’m the senior.” Baek Ji-young responded with a laugh, “Oh my God, senior. I forgot you’re my senior.” The playful exchange was later interpreted by some netizens as sneaky “struggle for power”, turning into a viral meme.

After hearing that the clip was still in circulation, Baek Ji-young said, “Do we talk about it? It’s really funny. Fin.KL is my senior.” However, Jung Suk-won chimed in, pointing out that Baek Ji-young had actually debuted in early 1997 as part of a trotting duo called “Voice of the trot.”

Taken by surprise, Baek Ji-young quickly interrupted, jokingly, “That doesn’t count! He has to be like Baek Ji-young to count. I’m the youngest,” causing laughter among the spectators.

Regarding his current relationship with Lee Hyori, Baek Ji-young clarified, “We’ve never really had a chance to get close. We’re the kind of people who might ask how the other is doing every now and then, that’s all.”
