Telegram Deletes and Apologizes for Deepfake Porn, But Koreans Are Less Than Impressed

Too little, too late?

Amid the deeply troubling scandal over deepfake porn, which has impacted celebrities and non-celebrities alike, Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) received an email from TelegramEast Asia representative apologizes for the “illegal content on the platform.”

On September 3, 2024 (KST), South Korean news outlets reported that Telegram had complied with the KCSC’s request to remove some deepfake pornographic content on the platform. In an official email, Telegram also reportedly apologized “for failure to communicate regarding the issue and shared an exclusive email address for future communications.”

While it is a small victory, the news has not impressed Koreans battling the rising digital sex crime plaguing the nation. According to the email, Telegram confirmed that it had removed “25 Sexually Exploitative Contents” from his platform. Koreans are ridiculing this “insignificant” number and calling both Telegram and KCSC for “put on a show” to avoid further involvement and/or potential penalties.

  • “We don’t need an apology. The perpetrators must be punished, including Telegram itself. We know that the apology is false and is intended to avoid further involvement.”
  • “25? Are they serious?”
  • “Yes, delete them. But don’t stop there. Provide us with the identities of the people who shared them.”
  • “Shut up, really.”
  • “Oh, so they want us to take this as a victory and shut up, huh? A whopping 25 cases?”
  • “…? That’s not what we’re asking for. Reveal their identities and have them punished. WTF?”
  • “25 is hilarious. We’re not just asking for deletion. We want the identities of the people who shared them.”
  • “Are they real? LOL.”
  • “Stop wasting time and give us the names.”
  • “Not even 2.5K? Only 25? Ah…!”
  • “25 cases… Who are they kidding? There are probably 2.5 million cases on that platform.”

Meanwhile, the KCSC said it had asked Telegram to set up a hotline with South Korean authorities to better respond to illicit content on the platform.

We want to strengthen cooperation with Telegram by ensuring a hotline, starting from the exclusive email address, to address the circulation of sexually exploitative deepfake content and ultimately eradicate digital sex crimes.
