More than 20 years ago, Xiao Dingdang was one of the most famous child actors in China. Alongside stars like Shi Xiaolong and Hao Shaowen, it dominated screens and became a defining childhood memory for an entire generation of moviegoers.
Xiao Dingdang, whose real name is Xie Yunshan, was born in 1990 in Beijing. He entered the entertainment industry just five years after being cast in the film Happy together. His natural acting talent quickly earned him recognition, and by the age of seven he became nationally famous thanks to the film Adventure in Hong Kong.
Thanks to her adorable appearance, especially her expressive and comical eyes, Xiao Dingdang has won over audiences across the country. At the height of his popularity, the Chinese media even nicknamed him “China’s number one child star.”
During his golden years, he appeared in numerous famous productions. He was praised by veteran actors including Ng Man Tat, Eric Tsang and Shu Chang, and some even played supporting roles around him.
However, his career trajectory changed dramatically as he grew up.
In 2009, Xiao Dingdang was admitted to the acting department of Beijing Film Academy. He continued acting and appeared in projects such as A dream in the Red Residence (2010) e The unlucky car (2012). Despite these efforts, his adult career failed to gain traction.
When his appearance changed and he lost his “cute baby” image audience associated with him, casting opportunities have decreased. Reports suggested that he had struggled to break free from his childish acting style and was heavily characterized. Some directors are said to have asked him to repeat scenes dozens of times, gradually losing patience and interest.
Faced with repeated setbacks, Xiao Dingdang attempted to move behind the scenes, working as a screenwriter and director. He directed the webfilm Clinic of souls in 2017, but the project had no impact.
Eventually, he returned to acting under his real name. Now approaching 40, he has been criticized for looking older than his age, with noticeable weight gain and a casual appearance. As a result, he was limited to minor roles in low-profile productions.
Once celebrated as a national child star, Xiao Dingdang has now fallen into obscurity. His story, often cited as a cautionary tale about the harsh realities that child actors face while growing up in the entertainment industry.
