On December 31, the Seoul Western District Prosecutor’s Office announced that Song Mino had been indicted without detention on charges of violating the Military Service Law. Along with him, an official identified as Mr A, the head of the Mapo Community Convenience Facility, was also charged without detention because he allegedly knew about Song’s negligent service and failed to intervene.
Song Mino is accused of failing to properly report for duty and falsely performing alternative military service between March 2023 and December 2024. During this period, he was assigned as a public service employee at the Mapo Facilities Management Corporation and later at the Mapo Community Convenience Facility. Prosecutors allege that on days when he showed up for work, he stayed only briefly, spent much of the time lying down while playing and then left early.
Police began investigating the case in December 2024 after receiving a request from the Military Manpower Administration. The investigation included a review of Song’s work attendance records and communications records. Song Mino appeared for police questioning on three separate occasions and reportedly admitted to most of the charges.
Mr. A is accused of giving special treatment to Song Mino. According to the indictment, after being transferred from the Mapo Facilities Management Corporation to the Mapo Community Convenience Facility, Mr. A arranged for Song to be reassigned to the same facility within one month, providing him with preferential treatment during his period of service.
The case now moves to trial, drawing public attention amid ongoing scrutiny of fairness and accountability in alternative military service.
