According to The Hollywood Reporter on December 18, Sony Pictures has officially begun developing a feature film BOOKS movie. Just a month after acquiring the rights, the studio secured Paul King, the acclaimed British director behind the film Paddington AND Wonkato guide the project.
Still in the early stages of development, the BOOKS the film is expected to gain momentum with King’s involvement. Known for his whimsical storytelling and visual appeal, King’s direction marks a promising start for the adaptation.
LABUBU, a mischievous yet endearing elf-like character, was created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, inspired by elements of Norse mythology. Since 2019, Chinese toy company Pop Mart has collaborated with Lung to release collectible LABUBU figurines. The toys’ popularity has skyrocketed around the world, especially among Gen Z, after being spotted with international stars such as Rihanna and BLACKPINK’s Lisa.
The LABUBU phenomenon has resulted in great financial success. In the first half of this year alone, Pop Mart recorded revenue of 13.9 billion yuan ($1.95 billion), more than triple the previous year. Net profits rose to 4.6 billion yuan, nearly quadrupling year on year.

With its explosive fan base and cinematic potential, the BOOKS the film could become the next global family franchise under the Sony brand.
