Once considered a shining symbol of talent, beauty and pedigree in Chinese entertainment, Ouyang Nana is now making headlines not for her artistry, but for the notable slowdown in her career. Known as the “Cello Princess,” Ouyang was destined for greatness. But today it finds itself at a critical crossroads, facing public skepticism and diminishing relevance.
Born in 2000 into a prestigious family and gifted with natural musical talent, Ouyang Nana’s path to stardom seemed easy. He was a cello prodigy at age 10, released a classical album at 15, and received a full scholarship to the Curtis Institute of Music at 17. His debut in showbiz was equally impressive: film roles alongside Jackie Chan in Bleeding Steel, a Forbes Asia “30 Under 30” award at just 19, and a huge following that spanned Asia.

But that golden streak seems to have faded.
Although Ouyang has boldly transitioned into acting and singing, critics say her skills have not kept pace with her visibility. His acting performances have repeatedly been called stiff and disappointing. Although his 2024 drama Dream of Eternal Peace recently aired, it had been filmed years earlier – with no new acting projects confirmed as of 2021.
It’s been more than 1,200 days since a production publicly announced Ouyang Nana’s casting, raising serious doubts about his once-promising status as an A-list star.

Meanwhile, his music career struggled to gain traction. Despite numerous EPs like NANA I and songs like The Best For You and Tell Me You Do Too, reactions to her live vocals have been lukewarm at best. The public often criticizes his voice as thin, unstable and unrefined. Although he appears at music shows and brand events, these appearances are increasingly overshadowed by online mockery and debates over his lack of vocal ability.
“She’s a cello genius, but not a singer,” one viral comment summed up the sentiment.
Beyond his performances, Ouyang Nana’s personal life has also taken center stage. Rumors linking her to actors like Liu Haoran and Chen Feiyu often circulate online, but not always to her advantage. Public perception has changed, with some labeling her a “scandal magnet”, better known for dating rumors than her work.

His appearances on reality shows have also attracted criticism, with some viewers calling his answers “tone-deaf” or “lacking depth”, further fueling doubts about his suitability for leading roles.
Visually, however, Ouyang Nana remains exceptional. Her glamorous red carpet appearances continue to attract media praise. Yet, as industry insiders point out, beauty alone cannot sustain a career in today’s hyper-competitive entertainment landscape.
“She has it all: family, looks, fame, education. But without the core skills, everything becomes noise,” said one entertainment analyst.

Her story is increasingly seen as a cautionary tale: Star power without substance is fragile. Many fans now wonder what might have happened if she had remained devoted to classical music. With his talent on the cello, he could have carved out a different, perhaps more respected, niche.
For now, Ouyang Nana’s once dazzling trajectory appears stalled. And unless a major artistic reinvention takes place, the entertainment industry may soon be looking past the one-time wunderkind who once had it all.
