Many viewers were stunned by the shocking behavior of a beloved Japanese comedian during a recent television appearance. In the show Kayōsai Desertthree members of the Japanese group AiScReam performed in several energetic stages. However, what caught the Internet’s attention was not the music, but a disturbing incident involving comedian Masatoshi Hamada and singer Ai Furihata, who is 31 years younger than him.
A video clip from the show, widely circulated on social media platform X as of November 30, shows Masatoshi Hamada suddenly approaching Ai Furihata from behind and putting her in a headlock. He then proceeds to drag her onto the stage on national television. More disturbing than the act itself was the response from the other celebrities on the show. Instead of intervening or expressing concern, they clapped and cheered enthusiastically, appearing amused by the disturbing sight.
The scene left many international viewers outraged. They questioned why such violent and inappropriate behavior was dismissed as humor and even encouraged by colleagues.
This type of scene is reportedly not entirely uncommon in Japanese television culture. Masatoshi Hamada’s controversial actions are in line with what is often considered his “signature comedic style”. However, this cultural framework has done little to quell global criticism. Many international fans and netizens have condemned both the show and the comedian, arguing that such behavior, especially towards women, should not be normalized under the guise of comedy.
“Justifying this as part of his comedic style is unacceptable,” wrote one netizen. “How can people find this funny? The moment he put her in a chokehold, I was worried for her. It’s not humor, it’s harassment,” added another. Many were in disbelief that such a scene could still occur in 2025, on mainstream television.
Masatoshi Hamada, born in 1963, is best known as one half of the influential comedy duo Centera household name in Japanese entertainment. But even his status as “national comedian” is now being questioned by a global audience demanding accountability and a reevaluation of what constitutes acceptable humor.
