Comedian Shin Dong-yup subtly addressed the ongoing cast changes of the SBS variety show My old manincluding buzz about Kim Jong-kook’s recent wedding and viewer speculation about cast departures.
In the latest episode of Shin Dong-yup’s YouTube channel Zzanbro Shin Dong-yup, released on November 10, guests Kim Won-hoon, Car, the Garden and Baek Hyun-jin joined him for a light-hearted and candid chat.
At one point, Kim Won-hoon asked, “If I could only choose one from SNL Korea, My old man, Animal farmor Zzanbro, which one would it be?” Without hesitation, Shin replied, “Zzanbro.”
When pressed for a reason, he explained, “I get to do everything I love here. Drink, meet good people, eat delicious food and talk about shows.”
Kim then jokingly replaced Zzanbro with Immortal songs and asked again. Shin replied in an almost joking tone, “The singers on Immortal Songs work really hard. And My Little Old Boy…well, guys keep getting married, so it’s exhausting. But the animals on Animal Farm are still doing great. They’re really consistent.”
When asked how long he had been hosting Animal farmShin said proudly, “25 years”, reflecting on its long-standing role.
The comments came amid a growing discussion among viewers about the importance of married celebrities continuing My old man. Cast members such as Kim Jong-kook, Kim Jong-min, Kim Jun-ho and Lee Sang-min, all now married, have left viewers wondering whether it is appropriate for them to remain on the show, which originally focused on single male celebrities and their lives from their mothers’ perspectives.
The show’s original concept is rooted in portraying the daily lives of unmarried male celebrities, seen through the lens of their mothers, essentially a comedic, observational take on adult “child-rearing”. As more and more cast members get married, some fans say the show is moving away from its initial premise.
