Netflix pays a bonus of 15 million dollars to the production company of KPop Demon Hunters, sequel scheduled for 2029

According to a Hollywood Reporter article published on November 6 (local time), Netflix granted Sony Pictures a bonus of approximately $15 million (approximately KRW 21.9 billion) as a reward tied to the film’s overall performance.

This additional payment pushes Sony Pictures’ total profit from the project to around $40 million (around KRW 58.2 billion). Notably, this figure is in addition to the production cost of $100 million (approximately KRW 145.4 billion) and a separate $25 million (approximately KRW 36.4 billion) previously received by Netflix.

Further interesting news came with the announcement that Netflix and Sony Pictures have signed a deal for a sequel KPop Demon Hunterswhich is scheduled for release in 2029. According to Variety, the extended timeline reflects the lengthy production process typical of animated films.

Originally, KPop Demon Hunters was intended for theatrical release. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted global film markets, prompting Sony Pictures to sell distribution rights to Netflix in 2021.

Netflix world-premiered the animated film in June of this year, and the response was nothing short of explosive: it has surpassed 300 million views, making it the most-watched Netflix film to date.

The film’s soundtrack also achieved phenomenal success. The track Golden not only did they reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, but they also simultaneously reached number one on the UK Official Singles Chart.

In addition to the recognitions, Golden was nominated in five categories at the prestigious Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year.
