In one of the most tragic and disturbing accidents connected to the culture of Fandom K-Pop, a 13-year-old girl from China lost her life during a conflict with her father, Zhou Kai in November 2013.
At the center of the tragedy was his growing obsession with the popular K-Pop group Exo A fixation that had started to influence his studies, behaviors and family life.
According to the reports of the Times, the clash began on something apparently less: a missing pen pen. But Zhou had already been alarmed by the refusal of his daughter to attend school and his growing disconnection from reality. He spent most of his time online, managing fans’ accounts and immersing himself in the world of Exo. Despite his efforts to reach, Zhou found himself getting away.
The words of his daughter during one of their topics would prove to be a heartbreaking turn: “I love them a thousand times more than I love you.” His declaration, giving priority to idols on his family, hit a devastating blow.
In a moment of emotional breakage, Zhou recovered a kitchen knife, presumably to scare it. But in an uncontrocket of anger, he stabbed him to death. Overwhelmed by remorse, Zhou tried to end his life, but survived.
A year later in court, Zhou Kai confessed the crime, revealing the profound emotional abyss that had developed between father and daughter. His room had become a sanctuary of Exo goods, and had even requested huge sums of money to participate in concerts: not aware of the financial tension on the family.
“I felt as if I no longer existed in his world”, Zhou said in tears during the trial. “When he said the idols are better than all parents like me … I couldn’t there anymore.”
