[Petition] Standing with Riwon against cyberbullying and hatred
HI. My name is Yeon Hye-Won, a strange feminist.
I am deeply angry from cyberbullying and direct hatred Together Member of the Cast Riwon on his past and I am sharing this open letter as a personal act of solidarity.
I am also asking others to sign the support. Too many women continue to be stigmatized and have their personal information threatened or exposed because of their past. This is not just an individual question: it is a form of misogyny, a manifestation of gender violence and part of the wider continuum of violence against women, including femicide.
As a strange feminist, I recognize my responsibility to engage with this problem and act, rather than simply observe from the sidelines. Above all, as a feminist, I am with women who have experience in sexual work – pastie or present – and I don’t think they should be condemned for this. “
Netizen reactions
The petition resonated with many, especially in the light of Riwon’s response on Instagram. However, the declaration also aroused offensive and humiliating comments of some users, who further aroused indignation.
Comments on Theqoo:
- This is exactly the reason why we cannot simply fire and ignore all those nonsense on “prostitutes” while transforming Wh*res into saints. We must never let this shit be normalized in traditional society.
- These lololol idiots that girl earned $ 200 a day only by removing her clothes and shaking them. Are you really out here do you feel sorry for her? How can you be stupid?
Many Netizen expressed their disgust for insensitive observations, stating that Riwon’s opening and will to help others have shown strength, not ashamed.
Comments on Theqoo:
- I am also a woman with lesbian tendencies, but damn … I just want to see their faces once. Who think they are, preaching women’s rights? For them, what about the rest of us? So damn selfish.
- I wonder how much shamelessly lived their lives to assume that no one could be better than them. Do they really think that all the others are just like them?
- Ugh, why the hell are “queer” and “feminist” treated as if they were the same thing? So damn annoying.
- …
While Riwon’s discussions on the petition and public position continue to grow, the controversy has evolved into a wider debate on compassion, responsibility and treatment of women – in particular LGBTQ+ individuals and those with stigmatized passages – in Korean society.
