The growing dependence of TVing on female nudity to attract attention is to attract criticism, in particular in its historical dramas such as “The Chunhwa scandal”, “Queen Woo” and “The queen who crowns”.
The Chunhwa scandal
“The Scandal of Chunhwa” of Tving is a drama classified by R which has aroused both the anticipation and the concern from the beginning. Given his theme, depicting Chunhwa (erotic paintings) of Joseon’s era, a certain level of nudity was expected.
However, at the time of release, only the actors in support appeared in naked scenes, raising questions about their need. From the scenes of Prince Hwaseong (Kim Taek) who secretly engage in business in a house in Gisaeng to princess Hwa -ri (Go Ara) and Choi Hwan (Chang Ryul) who attended a couple who had sex in mid-air, some moments felt excessive and useless. He also led to suspicions that the drama was exploiting the despair of minor actors for the time of the screen.
Queen Woo
While nudity can serve for a narrative purpose, its relevance and execution are important. “Queen Woo”, set in the Goguryo era largely without documents, required a creative narrative. However, a scene in which King Gonam-Mu (Ji Chang-Wook) relieves pain from battle wounds through sexual encounters, although intriguing, was undermined by camera strokes that have clearly emphasized women’s bodies.
The queen who crowns
The recent “The Queen who crowns” has aroused ethical concerns. A nude scene, initially not discussed with the actress, was filmed and subsequently modified using CGI with a double body. When she was questioned, the actress Cha Joo-Young admitted that the script had described only the atmosphere of the scene, which implies that the final cut deviated from her expectations.
Despite the statement of TVing according to which all the scenes have been agreed with actors and agencies, the relationships suggest that the requests of the actors to modify the scenes enhanced by CGGE have been ignored.
Risky strategy
This dispute model reflects CJ Enm’s aggressive strategy for TVing. The persistent use of the nudity of radius R despite the recourse suggests an attempt to increase paid subscriptions.
We remember the first days of Tvn in 2006, when the channel has often dealt with criticism for its provocative content, despite the hiring of a famous song-eui manufacturer to generate interest. Shows such as “TVNGELS” were finally canceled following the pressure of the civic groups. Over time, Tvn has found stability with quality productions such as the “Reply” series and varieties like “three meals a day” and “grandfather on flowers”.
Tving must reconsider his approach. Taking up on the fleeting shock value to attract subscribers is an unsustainable strategy. In the long term, the success of an OCC platform is defined by memorable content that resist the test of time. If similar disputes continue in the next dramas, the public can completely abandon the platform. Tving would do well to avoid repeating the same short -sighted mistakes as the past.
