Thirty-nine-year-old rapper San E (real name Jung San) has been arrested without detention following a months-long assault investigation.
According to Korean newspaper TenAsia, the Seoul Mapo Police Station ordered San E to stand trial in October on assault charges.
His father, Mr A, who was with him at the crime scene and accused of similar assault charges, reportedly agreed with the victim, leading to the conclusion of the investigation against the pair.
Following the settlement, the investigation was closed in accordance with Korea’s Anti-Will Penalty Law, which requires a demonstrable lack of consent for an action to be considered criminal.
San E was initially charged with assault in August after he reportedly attacked a passerby on August 28 at around 8.30pm in an underpass in Mapo-gu with a mobile phone after warning him to “handle his bicycle properly”. .
San E allegedly beat the victim, causing injuries, including cuts near his eyes and damage to his teeth.
Following the incident, San E issued an apology through his legal representative: “I sincerely apologize to the victim for the recent assault incident,” he said.
“I must first apologize in a statement, but I want to see the victim in person and ask for forgiveness. I am also sorry to many of you who would have been disappointed in me. Please reprimand me for my crimes.”
San E debuted in 2008 after gaining exposure as a producer on Mnet’s audition program Show me the money, and is known for hit songs such as “Story of Someone I Know” and “A Midsummer Night’s Sweetness.”
